Terms of service

Last updated:

Draft. This page is a draft for the closed beta and is still being reviewed. If anything here is unclear, please ask us.

These terms are the agreement between you and Khuram Khan ("we", "us") for using Shutdown: the website, the web app and the iOS app. We've tried to keep them short and readable. By creating an account or using the app, you agree to them. If you don't agree, please don't use Shutdown.

A beta, provided as-is

Shutdown is in a closed beta. Features will change, some will break, and some may disappear. We provide it "as is" and "as available", without promises that it will be uninterrupted, error-free or fit for a particular purpose, as far as the law allows. Please don't rely on it as the only place you keep something important: your tasks belong in your task manager too.

The beta is free. If we introduce paid plans, we'll tell you first and you'll choose whether to pay.

Not medical advice or treatment

Shutdown is a productivity tool for ending the workday. It is not a medical device and is not a diagnosis of, or treatment for, ADHD, burnout, anxiety, depression or any other condition. It doesn't replace advice or care from a doctor, therapist or other qualified professional. If you're struggling, please reach out to a professional or to someone you trust. If you're in crisis, contact your local emergency services.

Your account

  • You need to be at least 16 to use Shutdown.
  • Give us a working email address, keep your sign-in secure, and tell us if you think someone else has access.
  • You're responsible for what happens in your account.
  • One person per account, please.

Using it fairly

Please don't:

  • break the law, or use Shutdown to harm, harass or deceive anyone;
  • try to get into other people's accounts or data, or into parts of the service you're not meant to reach;
  • overload, probe or disrupt the service, or scrape it with bots;
  • reverse engineer it, except where the law allows you to;
  • resell or offer Shutdown to others as your own service.

Found a security problem? Thank you. Please email hello@khuramkhan.com instead of testing it on other people's data.

Your content stays yours

Your tasks, notes, plans, wins, moods and everything else you put into Shutdown belong to you. You give us permission to store, process and display that content only to run the service for you: to show it back to you, sync it across your devices, and do what you ask (like setting your Slack status). We don't claim ownership of it, and we don't use it for advertising. You can export it or delete it at any time; see the privacy policy.

If you send us feedback or ideas, we may use them to improve Shutdown without owing you anything for it. We're grateful anyway.

Connected tools

You can connect third-party services such as Todoist, Slack and Google Calendar. They're run by other companies under their own terms and privacy policies, which apply to your use of them. We aren't responsible for those services, and they may change or stop working with Shutdown at any time. You can disconnect them whenever you like.

Our part

Shutdown, its design, name and code belong to us. We give you a personal, non-exclusive, non-transferable right to use it under these terms. We'll do our best to keep it running and your data safe, as described in the privacy policy.

Limitation of liability

As far as the law allows, we're not liable for indirect or consequential losses, such as lost profits, lost data, missed deadlines or business interruption, arising from your use of Shutdown. During the free beta, our total liability to you for any claim is limited to the greater of what you paid us in the 12 months before the claim, or 50 US dollars. Nothing in these terms limits liability that can't be limited by law, such as for fraud, or for death or personal injury caused by negligence, or your rights as a consumer where you live.

Ending things

You can stop using Shutdown and delete your account at any time from the app's settings, or by emailing us. We may suspend or close an account that breaks these terms or puts the service or other people at risk; where reasonable, we'll warn you first and give you a chance to export your data. We may also end the beta or shut down the service; if we do, we'll give you reasonable notice so you can export your data first.

Changes to these terms

We may update these terms as the product changes. We'll update the date at the top, and for meaningful changes we'll let you know in the app or by email before they apply. If you keep using Shutdown after that, the new terms apply; if you don't agree, you can delete your account.

Governing law

These terms are governed by the laws of the jurisdiction where Khuram Khan is established (to be confirmed before launch). If you're a consumer, you also keep the protection of the mandatory laws of the country where you live, and you can bring a claim in your local courts.
